The Sustainable Mobility Academy (SMA) program was developed by the Southern Regional Assembly, Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly and Northern and Western Regional Assembly. It was announced in October 2022 by the Department of Transport as one of the successful projects under the National Pathfinder Programme under the theme of engagement and research. The creation of the Sustainable Mobility Academy is one of the first deliverables of the project. The platform will be kept updated and live throughout the Pathfinder Programme and beyond it. The Southern Regional Assembly (SRA), Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly (EMRA) and Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA), with the support of the Department of Transport, are collaborating with BABLE GmbH to deliver a project under the National Pathfinder Programme for Smart & Sustainable Mobility Accelerator: Building Capacity for Action in our Regions.
This project is a key initiative for the implementation of the National Sustainable Mobility Policy goals for safe and green mobility, people-focused mobility and better-integrated mobility. Key targets are set to achieve a 50% reduction in transport emissions and 500,000 extra walking, cycling and public transport journeys by 2030.
The pathfinder is a key initiative for the implementation of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies of the SRA, EMRA and NWRA and the achievement of Regional Policy Objectives for compact growth, sustainable, planned and infrastructure-led development, placemaking, sustainable mobility and a lower carbon future.
An important innovation developed by BABLE and delivered through the Pathfinder project is the creation of an online platform resource, the Sustainable Mobility Academy, to share knowledge about case study projects, outcomes and progress being made across all Local Authorities in each of the Regions for active travel and sustainable mobility.
