Challenge
In 2024, Ireland spent approximately €365 million on Active Travel. The challenge was to better demonstrate the overall positive impact of Active Travel using old and new data sources.
Solution
The project emerged from a multi-stakeholder workshop in February 2024 facilitated by Smart Dublin. Workshop participants included the four Dublin Council Active Travel teams, the Dept of Transport, the National Transport Authority, and Technology University Dublin.
The Dashboard aggregates data from multiple sources including Census data, Google EIE trips, Strava Metro and EcoCounter sensors to provide active travel volumes across the Region. It also overlays existing active travel infrastructure, to help correlate active travel volumes with the Region's network of cycle lanes.
Based on this data, the Dashboard provides the impact of Active Travel via a range of metrics, such as fuel savings, CO2 reductions, congestion time savings, and premature deaths avoided.
