Challenge
To give people more opportunities to choose walking and cycling for their day-to-day journeys, to boost the local economy by encouraging people to stay longer in the town, and to enhance the aesthetic and cultural appeal of the town.
Solution
To implement temporary changes in the town centre that create more space and safety for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as more potential business for traders and services. The changes include full closure of Cornmarket to all motor traffic, restriction of parking on Mercer Row and Market Place, conversion of Market Place parking to ‘blue badge only’ when the market is not operational, and installation of parklets on Mercer Row and elsewhere in town.
