Challenge
Providing safe, segregated cycling infrastructure in a rural location to facilitate local travel to school, link to public transport and link to the Greater Dublin Area cycling network into Swords, Rush, Donabate, Balbriggan and other local hubs.
This initiative aligns with Fingal County Council’s vision for Active Travel, contributing to safer routes to school, promoting better mental and physical health, and supporting a cleaner climate. The scheme represents another vital puzzle piece in the Fingal Active Travel network as we work towards integrating individual schemes into the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) cycle network.
Solution
By converting the existing hard shoulder to protected cycle lane on both sides of the road there is an opportunity to provide safe, segregated cycle lanes without reducing the carriageway in an area which must accommodate a high volume of large agricultural vehicle and freight traffic. Combined with traffic calming measures and a reduction in the speed limit, and a tailored solution for a school entrance on the route, safety is improved for everyone.
Traffic calming measures include tightening of a number of junctions adjacent to the route, installation of ghost islands, concrete islands and line markings. Bus stops along the route were also formalised with safe concrete waiting areas installed as part of this project.
Construction of the route began in September 2023 and is expected to be completed before the end of 2023.
