Challenge / Goal
Initially, the catalyst for the concept of the upgrade of the local town bus services was to compensate for the permanent removal of a number of on-street parking spaces in the town centre as part of separate project, the Navan Town Scheme (Navan 2030), in addition to the temporary removal of spaces during the construction/delivery phase of that project. Upon review of the existing bus services for the town, it was identified that alterations to the existing bus routes and enhancements to the bus services and infrastructure would likely result in increased levels of bus ridership. The key goals were to increase ridership levels, provide fully accessible bus services for wheelchair and mobility impaired bus users, and to offer a viable and reliable alternative which would potentially replace a proportion of short car based trips into Navan town centre.
Solution
1) Identification of existing routes and bus stop locations 2) Sifting process for alternative bus routes and identification of preferred option bus routes and bus stop locations (desktop) 3) Proposed bus stop location review on site for verification of available space and positioning of stops 4) procurement of Design Team (external Consultant Engineers) to undertake, amongst other items, public consultation process, detailed design , tender for contractor, and provide site supervision and contract administration.
