Challenge

The goal was to create a permeability scheme at two estates, Tournore Court and Tournore Park, Dungarvan. The estates originally had many barriers to permeability, including boundary walls and cul-de-sacs. This made walking, wheeling or cycling from the estates to the school and town longer and less practical compared to driving.

Solution

Changes were made to the roads and footpaths around the estates to allow secure, well-lit pedestrian and cyclist links through the residential areas. The scheme provided local footpath improvements and enhances pedestrian safety by improving pedestrian priority and reducing traffic speeds at crossing points. This has made fast, efficient, practical active travel access to the downtown Dungarvan facilities more practical.

Works included:

-new shared pathway (pedestrians & cyclists) added to connect estates

-improved pedestrian crossings on certain estate roads

-new public lighting added to existing link between the two estates

-new public lighting added to path surrounding estate green

-the opening of a previously closed throughway

In addition to this, improvements to existing infrastructure were made:

-Condition of footpaths, roadways and road markings improved in various areas

-Sections of existing damaged planting and fencing repaired and reinforced
