The Pathfinder Programme forms a key part of the implementation of the National Sustainable Mobility Policy (SMP), an initiative of the Government of Ireland through the Department of Transport. The SMP is a strategic framework to 2030 to achieve significantly greater levels of active travel (walking and cycling) and public transport journeys to lower carbon emissions from transport. It sets out the government’s plan to meet Ireland’s requirement to achieve a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in the transport sector. One of the first tasks of the SMP Leadership Group established to oversee and drive implementation of the Policy was to agree a programme of “pathfinder” projects at local level to demonstrate the objectives of the SMP in action over the next three years. These projects will provide a template for people focused projects which can be replicated and scaled up.
